Problem is it doesn't seem like there's an easy method to get to Bendery Fortress to Tiraspol that I'm finding. See a few Marshrutka's, but seems I have to transfer and really am not getting a good idea of where they eventually stop or pick up in Bender. Heard there is a trolleybus, but not finding any information on that either.

You have to keep in mind that the two sides never agreed about the border, as they don't agree about the independence of Transnistria from Moldova. So it's just a de-facto border that is not delimited. For practical reasons, it's enough to know where the transnistrian authorities control.

Maybe there is a secondary road OpenStreetMap - OSM shows a track from moldovan-controlled Hagimus-village leading somewhere near the sewage plant you mentioned and that's the reason for the "checkpoint"?
Or do you have any other indication that you left PMR? On the right side of the street between Merenesti and Bender, OSM shows a dacha-settlement named in russian - this might also indicate that it's on PMR-controlled territory. On WIkimapia, you can still find an area, marked as deleted, that says like "territory on the right side of the Dniestr-river a part of old romanian territory of Bessarabia , controlled by the criminal regime of Tiraspol ":.
